HOSPITAL FOR SPECIAL SURGERY

OFFICIAL ON-SITE MEDICAL PROVIDER

Founded in 1863, Hospital for Special Surgery is the oldest orthopedic hospital in the United States. HSS clinicians and surgeons provide specialized care to more than 200,000 patients and perform more than 40,000 orthopedic surgical procedures each year.

HSS is the world’s leading academic medical center focused on musculoskeletal health. At its core is Hospital for Special Surgery, ranked No. 1 in orthopedics for 15 years in a row by U.S. News & World Report (2024-2025). HSS has also been among the top-ranked hospitals for both orthopedics and rheumatology for 33 consecutive years. Furthermore, HSS is the Official Hospital of the New York Football Giants, the New York Mets, the New York Knicks, the New York Liberty, and the New York Red Bulls. Our doctors and physical therapists also work closely with USA Basketball, US Rowing and USA Swimming, and various US Rugby entities, formerly Rugby United NY (of MLR), among other teams. HSS was appointed as the first official national center to care for U.S. Olympic athletes, as an Olympic Medical Center.

The HSS Research Institute comprises 20 laboratories and 300 staff members focused on leading the advancement of musculoskeletal health through prevention of degeneration, tissue repair and tissue regeneration. With its state-of-the-art technology, large patient volume, and special “bench to bedside” teams of doctors and scientists, HSS can swiftly translate scientific breakthroughs into clinical treatments. The global standard total knee replacement was developed at HSS in 1969. The HSS Innovation Institute was formed in 2016 to realize the potential of new drugs, therapeutics, and devices.

RUGBY RESEARCH AND INJURY PREVENTION GROUP

OFFICIAL ON-SITE CLINICAL SCIENCE OFFICERS

The Rugby Research and Injury Prevention Group, Inc. (“RRIPG”), an affiliate of Hospital for Special Surgery, established in 2009, was a result of the announcement of rugby’s inclusion in the Olympics.  The founder of the organization was Victor Lopez Jr., DO and was guided by Answorth A. Allen, MD.

RRIPG/HSS, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to rugby player welfare research, education, and training. The group is comprised of professionals from various backgrounds, including experts in exercise, sports science and medicine, traumatology, orthopedics, pain management, nutrition, athletic training, physiotherapy, and applied sciences (including epidemiology). RRIPG’s board upholds relationships in the local, regional, national, and global sports and rugby community. Affiliated with many important educational institutions in the U.S., Europe, and Oceana, we use this shared knowledge to help the U.S. player cohort.

For the past 15 years, RRIPG has collected data across the U.S. from competitive region/Geographic union 7-a-side qualifiers to the National club 7s championships, to provide tangible insights into the epidemiological, musculoskeletal and concussion injury incidence and severity of youth and adults.  Since 2014, RRIPG’s efforts have been through the Hospital for Special Surgery, Institutional Review Board-Hospital Registry, the first in the Americas injury surveillance systems.

RRIPG aims to be the leading resource of information on U.S. rugby players’ welfare and safety and plans to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between health professionals in sports medicine and science and the rugby community.
